Retail dataset for KPI practice — stockout rate, customer journey, promotions and margin

DATA DARE on findi360 has free retail practice sets at five levels for working out real retail KPIs — stockout rate, customer journey, promotion effect, product profitability and inventory — each with a graded question bank and, up to L4, the expected results in its Question Book, so you can check your own answer. The files download with a free account.

The KPIs you will calculate

  • Stockout rate — how often a product is unavailable when it should be on sale, by store and month.
  • Customer journey — how customers move from visit to purchase, and where they drop.
  • Promotion effect — sales and margin during a promotion against the weeks around it.
  • Product profitability — margin by product and category once discounts and returns are counted.
  • Inventory — cover, ageing and the cost of holding stock.

Why practise KPIs on a dataset

A KPI definition is one line; getting the number right is the hard part — which rows count, which date, which denominator. Each question states the business definition and its expected result is in the Question Book, so you find out whether your measure is right rather than merely plausible.

The levels

L1 is daily sales in Excel, enough for a first model. From L2 the data is transaction-level, L4 is an enterprise package on profitability and inventory optimisation with millions of rows, and L5 is a group close of 14 million general-ledger lines across stores, online and a franchise, with its answers held back.
