Consolidation practice dataset for Excel and Power BI
DATA DARE on findi360 has a free consolidation practice set: trial balances for a parent and its subsidiaries, intercompany balances to eliminate, a non-controlling interest and, at the higher levels, foreign-currency subsidiaries and a mid-year acquisition with goodwill. It pairs with a free recorded course, Basic Consolidation in Power BI, that builds the eliminations in DAX. Both are free; the files need a free account.
What the consolidation set contains
The set is published level by level, and each level adds the next real-world complication. The ones live now are listed below.
- A parent, a 100%-owned subsidiary and a 70%-owned subsidiary, so there is a non-controlling interest to compute.
- Intercompany sales to eliminate; at higher levels intercompany loans, dividends and unrealised profit in stock.
- A foreign-currency subsidiary from L3 (USD group with SAR; AED and PKR by L4) and an FX rate table.
- At L4: a mid-year acquisition, goodwill, monthly trial balances over three years and an account mapping in text form.
- No calendar table is shipped — building one in DAX is part of the exercise.
Questions you will answer
- Consolidated revenue and profit after eliminations, by month and by year.
- The non-controlling interest share of profit and of net assets.
- Unrealised profit in closing stock and its effect on group profit.
- Goodwill on acquisition and the translation difference on the foreign subsidiary.
Excel or Power BI
The lower levels are Excel and CSV files, so the whole exercise can be done in Excel with lookups and pivots. Power BI is where it pays off: one model, elimination measures written once in DAX, and every question answered by changing a slicer. The free recording below shows that build end to end.
